Motorcycle Insurance
Your Motorcycle Insurance Agency
California boasts more motorcycles than any other state. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Golden State also offers a near-endless vista of scenic rides, including Big Bear Lake, the Angeles Crest and the iconic Pacific Coast Highway. At Fara Insurance Solutions, we share the passion for this open road. From our home in Rialto, we’re rolling into our second decade of serving riders’ motorcycle insurance needs.

California’s Motorcycle Coverage Requirements

Every motorcycle or motor-driven cycle rider in California must carry liability insurance. State law defines a motorcycle as a vehicle with two or three wheels and an engine displacement of at least 150 ccs. Saddled vehicles with an engine smaller than 150 ccs carry the motor-driven cycle classification. California requires these insurance levels for both cycle types:
- $15,000 liability for one other person’s injuries
- $30,000 liability total coverage for all other involved persons’ injuries
- $5,000 for damage to another person’s property
The other person covered by the injury liability categories includes a passenger on your bike. If you frequently ride with a passenger, ask us for a motorcycle insurance quote with a liability limit above the state minimum. California law requires that your cycle must have an approved passenger seat if another person climbs aboard.
Failure to carry these coverages can lead to fines, a license suspension or your bike’s impoundment. Riders under age 21 must also complete the 15-hour California Motorcyclist Safety Program to obtain insurance and earn their licenses.
While California does not require insurance for mopeds and motorized bikes, getting coverage for these lower-powered vehicles is wise and easy to afford. Whether you are riding a moped, motorized bike, motor-driven cycle or motorcycle, California law requires an approved helmet for riders and passengers. Wearing a helmet is also plain common sense, and failure to don this vital head protection will likely void any insurance claim.
Recommended Motorcycle Insurance Coverage
Along with the fun, freedom and fuel efficiency of a motorcycle comes an element of risk: In an accident, a cycle offers far less protection than an automobile. This harsh reality means that recovery for an injured rider may take months or even years. With these consequences, Fara Insurance Solutions recommends coverage above the required motorcycle insurance in California.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
You aim to ride safely and responsibly every time, but not every motorist on California’s roads exercises the same care. In the worst case, a driver may victimize you and unlawfully abandon the accident scene without leaving a name or proof of insurance. In a more likely situation, a motorist may carry only the state-mandated minimum coverage, an amount that often falls well short of an injured rider’s medical care needs. In either case, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage can help you pay the bills as you recover.
Medical Payments Coverage
California’s required coverage applies only to the injuries suffered by other persons. If you suffer injury in an accident, medical payments coverage will pay regardless of fault. You may apply these funds to expenses such as prescription medications, therapy or copayments for your health policy. Ask your Fara agent for a motorcycle insurance quote, and learn how medical payments and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage works with your existing health insurance to provide for your recovery after an accident.
Full Bike Insurance
Full bike coverage adds comprehensive and collision provisions to your motorcycle insurance package. If you are financing your motorcycle, your lender may require this coverage. Here’s how both components work:
- Collision coverage pays for damage to your motorcycle after a collision with an object or another vehicle.
- Comprehensive coverage covers damage to your bike from incidents such as fire, vandalism or theft.
Comprehensive and collision coverage applies to your motorcycle’s standard components. If you have made a substantial investment in custom parts for your cycle, ask your Fara Insurance Solutions agent about optional equipment coverage.
New Rider Discounts
If you are over 21 and embarking on the motorcycle adventure, consider taking the courses offered by the California Highway Patrol. New riders who complete the CHP’s introductory California Motorcyclist Safety Program or the advanced one-day CMSP Premier Course may qualify for premium discounts.

Seasonal Policies
While nearly every day in California is a good day to ride, many Californians own a cycle that sees action for limited periods each year. If you have a bike that you only ride in selected months, a seasonal policy from Fara Insurance Solutions can provide substantial savings.
Foreign Riders
Our bilingual team stands ready to help foreign riders obtain motorcycle insurance in California. While our state will accept your home country license for up to one year, obtaining a California driver’s license may lower your premiums. Talk to a Fara Insurance Solutions agent before your arrival to learn your best options.
